James Cameron Smith, Raven

James Cameron Smith, Raven, 2024, cedar, recycled bicycle tires, and tubes, aluminum, polyurethane , 36 x 24 x 26 inches

Work Statement

The sculpture highlights community qualities and presents a physical reminder of the importance of the natural environment. The piece references First Nations mythology of the raven as a trickster and transformer while embracing environmental values such as sustainability and resourcefulness.

The Raven is constructed from a cedar core which is feathered using recycled bicycle tires and tubes. Each tire is meticulously cut to resemble individual feathers. The eyes are dynamic iridescent glass, and the legs and feet have aluminum rod cores finished with tire tubing.

Elise Muller, Attunement One

Elise Muller, Attunement One, 2018, granite, 21 x 12 x 8 inches, $2,800

Work Statement

My granite sculpture Attunement One was carved using hand tools (chisels & mallets) as well as diamond carving tools. It was polished both by hand and with a polisher over the flatter areas. The stone is known as St. George Red Granite, and I brought that piece of stone back from an Artist Residency in New Brunswick. I submitted Attunement One as my Maquette for the Canadian Sculpture Competition at Kingsbrae Garden and when I was accepted, I carved a much larger version which won the Competition in 2018.

I wanted to submit this piece to the Fenelon Falls Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition because it reminds of my grandmother who grew up in Fenelon Falls (nee Betty Menzies to my great grandma Laura Menzies who lived right in town). This sculpture of the connection between a parent and their child, which is a universal theme, has been carved in beautiful pinkish red stone that will last forever. Attunement One is permanently attached to a 30 inch steel pedestal.

Rosalinde Baumgartner, Georgina

Rosalinde Baumgartner, Georgina, 2018, sculpture clay, patina, 22 x 16 x 13 inches, $2,000

Work Statement

For this sculpture I used a drawing of our favourite life model, Georgina. She had posed for our drawing classes for years; we knew her very well. The relaxed seated pose reflects a secure inner contentment. This sculpture has been exhibited outdoors from May until October for the Fergus Elora Sculpture Project.

Carolanne MacLean, Gaye

Carolanne MacLean, Gaye, 2016, ciment fondu, 12 x 7 x 10 inches, $3,900

Work Statement

This sculpture is an investigation of texture, beauty, tranquility, and deep reflection of youth. MacLean spent her childhood holidays with relatives in Fenelon Falls; her mother was raised on a farm in Cresswell, and her grandmother later lived in Little Britain and Lindsay.

Lynne Sproule, The Fertility Goddess

Lynne Sproule, The Fertility Goddess, 2024, winterstone, 24 x 24 x 30 inches, $5,000

Work Statement

I created The Fertility Goddess to pay tribute to the importance equines, large and small, played in the development of agriculture, commerce, and community in Fenelon Falls. This sculpture embraces the bright and playful nature of horses and the ‘goddess’ brings with her the added elements of abundance and prosperity.

The Fenelon Arts Committee (FAC), in partnership with the City of Kawartha Lakes, invites expressions of interest from artists or teams of artists to participate in the inaugural call for sculptures in the newly built garden planters located along Colborne Street in downtown Fenelon Falls. Each work will be on display from May to October 2024 as public art.

The FAC identifies opportunities for artists, strategizes on arts initiatives, and works to increase public access and engagement with art in the village of Fenelon Falls. The KWCC works to improve the social infrastructure in Kawartha Lakes by enabling the creation, development, and management of not-for-profit initiatives with artistic, cultural, recreational, health, environmental, economic, and social improvement aims.

The Fenelon Falls Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition will feature a collection of six sculptures mounted on limestone base rocks located inside the garden planters. A jury of local arts and cultural leaders and business leaders will be appointed by the FAC to select the works.

This year marks the 150th anniversary of the village of Fenelon Falls. The FAC is looking to incorporate elements and interpretations reflecting 150 years. A brief description of Fenelon Falls is at the end of this call for submissions.

EXHIBITION INSTALLATION GUIDELINES

  • All sculptures must be securely fastened to the mounting system on the limestone base.

  • The bases consist of an irregular shaped limestone rock with four (4) threaded rods of 5/8”.

  • The rods are placed in a square pattern 5.25” centre to centre

  • Your sculpture should have a plate of steel or other suitable material to connect to the rods. This can be integral to the sculpture or a platform or pedestal that the sculpture will be securely attached to.

  • If your plate will be hidden or in an enclosure please make sure it is accessible to allow for tools and tightening.

  • Holes on your plate should be one inch (1”) in diameter.

  • If your base plate is thick, the bolt and washer may need to be recessed. Please cut the recess hole at least 2.25” in diameter in order to accommodate the washer and the tool used to tighten the nut.

  • The threaded rods are 3-4” high.

  • TIP: Cut the large hole first so you can ensure the smaller hole for the rod is centred. Be sure to maintain the 5.25” centre to centre pattern.

  • A sign will be created with your information and affixed to a sign holder bracket.

  • Please inquire before fabrication if you need any further details.

ABOUT THE VILLAGE OF FENELON FALLS

Fenelon Falls, known as the jewel of the Kawarthas, is situated approximately 2 hours northeast of Toronto and lies on the Trent-Severn Waterway. The stunning natural surroundings, including waterfalls, a gorge, and numerous lakes, attract visitors throughout the year for tourism and cottage living. Additionally, Fenelon Falls offers the 85-km Victoria Rail trail that connects Kinmount to Lindsay.

Originally named Cameron Falls, Fenelon Falls was renamed after Francois de Salignac de La Monthe-Fénelon who visited the Trent-Severn Waterway and recognized it as an ideal location for a mission and early settlement. In the early 1800s, pioneers settled in this area by the falls which served as an important trade route for fur traders. Logging and agriculture flourished during this time with a prosperous flour mill being established in Fenelon Falls. To facilitate transportation of lumber, a bridge was constructed over the river in the 1860s to accommodate trains.

With its rich history, residents of Fenelon Falls celebrate their heritage through tea parties and events at Maryboro Lodge Museum where various artifacts are displayed. The community also enjoys outdoor performances at Grove Theatre - an amphitheatre nestled in nature - featuring concerts, live music shows, and theatrical performances. The Colborne Street Gallery showcases an extensive collection of art from local Canadian artists as well as international emerging and established artists. Fenelon Falls is also home to diverse shops offering unique gifts items along with antique stores, restaurants offering delicious cuisine options, and places for health and wellness services - not forgetting about ice cream! Visitors are welcome to enjoy beautiful gardens overlooking Cameron Lake.

Throughout all seasons of the year, Fenelon Falls hosts various community events such as fall fairs, farm tours, Easter egg hunts, Santa Claus parade, and art tours attracting many visitors from near & far. The community’s commitment to art and culture, and its reputation to inspire and engage the public with art, draws many return visitors from across Canada, United States and abroad.
